Strolling in the snow in West Kraków

I have a lot of fond memories of my time in a small village near Kraków. Aside from 48 hours of Wedding celebrations, it pretty much impressed me how nice the Polish snow was, being from an island that pretty much gets freezing rain and ice at an annual basis you would appreciate it more ( unless you’re driving ).  It’s hard to say where exactly this was taken, only because it’s difficult to spell the name correctly.

Somebody watches from the Cork District Asylum

I often wonder if it would bother me to be having breakfast in the same room that use to detain individuals diagnosed with mental illness up to 30 years ago. I’d probably just shrug my shoulders and happily continue eating in blissful ignorance. So far, half of Our Lady’s Hospital ( or St Ann’s Hospital ) in Cork City has already been converted into apartments,  the remnants of its past is slowly being concealed under a new coat of paint. While the renovation is still on-going, the small golden painted figurines on the hospital grounds still keep Cork City under their watchful gaze.

Sunrise in Schull

This photo was taken in the very early hours of the morning in Schull, during the Fastnet Film Festival, which is hosted in the West Cork village on an annual basis. I had trouble sleeping that night, and what better way to beat off insomnia than by going hill walking in the dark.

Rowing in the Marina

If you’re feeling brave enough to test the waters at the bottom of the Lee, The Lee Rowing club at the Marina provides that ample opportunity. I’m not only amazed by the rowers ability to avoid small tankers but also by their tenacity to row upriver, stopping just before the Distillery Fields on an early Saturday morning, regardless of harsh weather conditions and discarded shopping trolleys.

Staring down from the Idle Tower

It was during Cork Heritage Open day when I had the opportunity to visit the top most apartment of The Elysian, the tallest fish-out-of-water building in Cork city.

Breaking Dawn in Pope’s Quay

I’m not much of an early bird, I struggle enough getting out of bed at 7:20 am and then I start to debate with myself whether or not I should sacrifice some work time for snoozing. It’s been 2 years like this and I’m still not accustomed to it. The good thing though about getting up early in the morning, is seeing the sunrise outside my window, now there’s something to appreciate from these early starts. Especially when you have a camera lying around.

Shandon Bells are ringing out

Church of St Anne, is one of Cork City’s most iconic buildings that lies at the north side of the city ( yet many businesses on the south side insist on using Shandon in their name despite being several kilometres away from it ). Music can be constantly heard from these bells at a daily rate. This is unfortunate for two reasons, first being that the bells only have 4 notes to play and the visitors that get to play them only know the melody to Three Blind Mice .

Update: I was wrong, on a recent visit you can play up to 8 notes but that still doesn’t stop people from playing Three Blind Mice

Rowing in the Beaulieu river

We decided to moor halfway between Buckley’s Hard and the Beaulieu near South Hampton, United Kingdom. Around the time of June, it’s popular place to go to especially for Mosquitoes. The surrounding area was reasonably quiet but much less so in the 1800’s during the industrial revolution, as evidenced by the ruin of a brick factory nearby our mooring spot. Interestingly enough the locals have 50 different pronunciations for Beaulieu.

Allihies beach

Like most of West Cork, Allihies is a pretty nice place to visit. I intend on going back to it someday since spending only an hour at the beach at the time didn’t quite do it justice and there is an abandoned copper mine I want to explore as well. The most distinctive landmark of Allihies is its beach.

HDR of Cork City Hall

On occasion I like to walk from Cork City all the ways to the Cobh via the old railway line , early on in the trip I pass the City Hall by East Albert Quay. It’s open on the odd few occasions for exhibitions …
