Lime on a Mussel Colony

I went down to Monkstown yesterday to harvest some mussels to snack on later that evening. Then I noticed a lime sitting on top a group of mussels. Aside for possibly trying to add flavour to raw seafood, I still haven’t figured out why would anyone do this …

Miniature Firkin Crane

I decided to try something fun with an image of the Firkin Crane I had after reading the Wikipedia article about miniature faking . Here’s an attempt I made earlier:

Actual size

But it’s nowhere near as awe inspiring as this.

Waiting for the Cross River Ferry in Glenbrook

This was taken short while ago on a stroll from Cork City to Cobh, here myself and the sis are waiting on the Cross River Ferry to take us to the other side from Glenbrook. Once you get to the other side, Cobh is less than a 15 – 20 minute walk away.

Bee and the Indian Balsam

…. or Himalayan Balsam as it’s called. It’s an invasive species that’s been spreading around England and Ireland according to the Wikipedia article but at least the bees don’t seem to mind.

Sunset at Pope’s Quay

I was walking home yesterday after some grocery shopping when I noticed how stunning the sky looked, I ran home to grab the camera and rushed back to a pretty good spot on the foot bridge. I took a dozen or so group of snaps to prep up a HDR image. In the end I’ve settled for using one of the snaps taken at the highest shutter speed as opposed to using a tone mapped one. The silhouetted portrayal of the north side of the city looked a lot better than its colourful HDR counterpart.

A bored looking dog on Paddy’s Day

If it wasn’t for the fact that this mangy dog had his back turned towards the Paddy’s Day parade I wouldn’t have noticed him at all. His face says it all, not an iota of interest in the happenings of the parade and probably dying to get home to chew on the sofa. You and me both buddy.

"I'm dying for a cigarette"

HDR: George Boole’s House in Cork

At 5 Grenville Place in Cork City lies a seemingly insignificant and forgotten looking building, upon closer inspection a plaque displayed at the front of the house proves otherwise. It reads as follows:

George Boole

1815-1864

Mathematician, Inventor of Boolean Algebra, Professor of Mathematics, Queens College ( Now U.C.C ). He live here from 1849 to 1855.

The man who was regarded as the founder of the field of Computer Science used to live here, which is pretty cool in a geek sense. The building is undergoing renovation since March 2011, with Cork City Council spending €135,000 on the restoration work.

HDR: “cut and cover” railway tunnel near Monkstown

The name derives from the method used to construct this railway tunnel for the Cork City to Crosshaven line, a trench was cut and the excavated material was then used as material for the cover. More info about the old railway line can be read here.
